See You in the Motherland

In the words of Tom Robbins, “All a person can do in this life is gather about him his integrity, his imagination and his individuality – and leap into the dance of experience.” I have felt the universal rhythm quickening and soon I will be dancing under the African sun, relishing in small pleasures and coping with misfortune.

I know some people worry about my safety while traveling in East Africa. I know “be careful” really means “please come home” and I know that everyone’s wishes are well-intended. I’m aware of the area’s political turmoil and publicized dangers – but I’m also excited. Excited to be out in the world learning new languages and meeting new people. Excited to be overwhelmed by beauty and emotion and underwhelmed by expectations. Excited to feel simultaneously at wits end and at peace, to observe cultural differences and learn from inevitable mistakes.

I recently came across this video from ted.com. Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie gives a beautiful presentation about stereotypes and the dangers of the single story, which seems especially poignant as I leave for my African adventure. Hopefully I will be able to relate many different stories of Africa – the good, the bad, the incredulous and the endearing. There will be many from every category.

And yes, I will be careful.

  1. Well said Jeni
Have a great trip, it will be fun to follow you on your adventure.

  2. Love you Jeni and I miss you terribly. I hope everything went seemlessly on the way out to Africa. Sorry if I overdid the “be carefuls.” I just want you to come home happy and healthy! Experience all that you can!

I hate being so far away! LOVE LOTS!
