The Mammals of Murchison » Elephant

Elephant

“Shit, that elephant is HUGE!” said the English guy standing next to me.
“Mm-hmmm,” I replied wearily. He had been saying similar things all morning.
“It’s sort of coming right at us, isn’t it?”
“Yeah…”
The elephant in front of our car trumpeted a baleful song and drew its ears up to their maximum height. He charged, his enormous tusks loping up and down with each massive stomp.
“Rev the engine!” our guide demanded. The engine sputtered a loud obnoxious grunt, and the giant animal stopped in his tracks. He eyed us wearily, and with enormous strength turned around and sauntered off to join his family, making triumphant hooting noises as he went.
